Express Scopelitis L’histoire

L’Express Scopelitis, ce petit bateau, est un souffle de vie pour les habitants des Petites Cyclades - Heraklia, Schinoussa, Koufonisi, Donousa - car il constitue leur principal lien avec le reste du monde. Il assure le rôle de la poste, de l'épicerie, de la pharmacie, du service public, de la boulangerie et bien plus encore. Ces îles ont très peu de résidents en hiver. Scopelitis nous y emmène ; nous restons juste un instant pour assister à une vie façonnée par le vent, le soleil et la mer. Au printemps, le navire entre dans le chantier naval pour l'entretien annuel. C'est le moment où le capitaine et l'équipage vivent tous ensemble pendant un mois entier, à l'intérieur du navire, et le réparent seuls. Nous retrouvons Scopelitis « dénudé » dans le chantier naval de Salamis, en cours de réparation par son équipage. Il est exposé, fragile, entre les mains expérimentées des dockers. Nous nous « enfonçons » plus profondément en lui, nous entendons les sons riches et mélodieux produits par les outils et le travail des dockers. C’est un travail difficile, mais essentiel pour que Scopelitis puisse reprendre la mer l’année suivante. Le compositeur voulait écrire la musique en utilisant les sons du bateau lui-même. Il a enregistré plusieurs sons du Scopelitis amarré dans le port d'Amorgos et il a également utilisé la conception sonore du film autant qu’un instrument. Chaque battement de la musique est un son du bateau et de ses environs.

Express Scopelitis, this tiny boat is a breath of life for the residents of Small Cyclades - Heraklia, Schinoussa, Koufonisi, Donousa – as it forms their main connection with the rest of the world. It serves as the post, the grocery, the apothecary, the public service, the bakery and much more. These islands have very few inhabitants during wintertime. Scopeltis takes us there; we stay for a while to witness a life shaped by wind, sun and sea. During springtime the ship gets in the boatyard for the standard yearly maintenance; this is the time they live all together – the captain and the crew - for a whole month, inside the same ship, which they repair on their own. We find Scopelitis “naked” in the boatyard of Salamis, being repaired by her crew. She is exposed, fragile, left in the experienced hands of the dockworkers. We “sink” deeper within her, we listen to the rich, melodious sounds produced by the tools and the toil of the dockworkers. It’s hard labor, but it’s essential in order for Scopelitis to set sail for another year. The composer wanted to make music from the sounds of the boat itself. He recorded various sounds on Scopelitis in the port of Amorgos and also used the sound design of the film as an instrument. Every beat of the music is a sound of the boat and its surroundings.
